Okay, so no one actually kills themselves in this book.
The Coolest Way to Kill Yourself pulls you into the early 90’s New York City rave scene, in all its chaotic, psychedelic glory. The narrator grabs you by your wrist and drags you behind two teenage lovers from New Jersey as they tumble through a whirlwind of reckless hedonism that eventually spirals into a dark, devastating world of drug addiction and heartbreak.
As a teenager, Lynn cried, “No one is ever going to write something for me.”
Nearly two decades later, in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, Nicholas did just that. The gesture came too late for our unlikely heroine, but his heart was in the right place. A broken heart… but a true love.
Reunited after years apart, Lynn and Nicholas embraced their love and sexuality, and embraced each other, despite troubled pasts, despite illness, despite all of their imperfections and mistakes. They shared the kind of honest and shameless connection that few have had the honor of knowing, and most would never understand.
“We’re not hurting anyone. We’re just living life without caring what anyone thinks about us, without caring about the consequences.”
“It’s the coolest way to kill ourselves,” Lynn said.
So turn the page, and pull the trigger.

Beautiful writing, great story-telling. It was poignant, honest and wonderfully and uncomfortably gritty at times. I liked the concept of lessons learned, second chances, humility gained, and learning the real meaning of true love and friendship.I initially gave this book 4 stars. However, two days later I still had a book hangover. I couldn't seem to recover from the story of Nicholas and Lynne so I realized that this needed 5 stars. The honesty in the story that the author displayed was very unsettling and brave that it will stay with me for a long time. The truth that was shared in their relationship was really beautiful. They shared a true intensity, understanding and language with each other. This was a lovely tribute to someone who changed his life for the better and mine has been changed by reading it. You will hold the person you love a little tighter and closer after reading this.

The Coolest Way to Kill Yourself edition by Nicholas Tanek Health Fitness Dieting eBooks Reviews
Nostalgia is a tricky thing. You can hear a song, catch a whiff of specific scent on the breeze, see a picture of some long forgotten place and suddenly, you’re there. Right back there. Re-living memories that may or may not be welcome. You can just as easily be sucked into a vortex of pain and regret as you can find yourself re-living a fantastically lovely moment. Indulging in nostalgia is a bit like opening Pandora’s Box – you know whatever is going to come out is powerful, but whether it’s good or not is to be decided.
I found myself firmly encased in nostalgia reading the first half of this book. Although the geography was different, the music, the drugs, the situations, the people, the conversations were so thoroughly reminiscent of my adolescence and college years that I had to stop reading several times to let the memories wash over me. I had to go back and pull up songs that I haven’t heard in 20 some odd years, just because I had to hear them again. I found myself staring off into space immersed in memories that haven’t surfaced in decades. It was fun and interesting and concrete proof that hindsight is 20/20.
This book is a story of relationships. It’s a story of one man’s journey through the first half of his life told through his relationships. At the end of the day, that’s all any of our lives are – a string of relationships to people, places and things. The ripple effects of which we allow to define us now and then, past, present and future.
Nicholas Tanek has written a somewhat clumsily crafted story about the relationships that formed him into the man he is today. I don’t know how much of this story is true and how much of it is fiction and I don’t care. What I do care about is that even though I could spend an entire review picking apart his writing on technical issues, I have no desire to. Because this book, regardless of its interpretation, is honest. This book is so utterly authentic that it is heartbreaking. You cannot look at a story told with such sincerity and not have it affect you deeply.
I had no idea what to expect from this book when I picked it up. I did not expect for it to sneak up and leave me so thoroughly gutted. I did not expect that initial nostalgia to turn into such a deep connection with the storyteller. I did not expect to be writing this review. But I’m so grateful for all of those. Like blocks clicking into place, I reached the end of this book and realized that I was forever changed by it. Not only because it so easily could have been my own story, but because it so eloquently displayed the wounded, triumphant, joyful feeling that you get when you look back on your life and realized that through the mistakes and successes, you are better for it all.
I know that this review hasn’t actually told you much about this book. I’ve not even given you character names, really. But you can get all of that from the blurb. I had to write about what this book taught me, what it made me see. Because at the end of the day, that’s what matters. Life and the people we choose to share it with, is what matters. Laced through with love and honesty – that’s the total package.
I was kind of taken aback the first time I saw the title of this book and thought how in the world could there possibly a 'cool way' to end your life? But as it popped up here and there on Facebook and began to create its own buzz and started to receive more and more positive reviews, I decided I would buy it and see exactly what it was really all about.
Very different from the romance books I've read, The Coolest Way To Kill Yourself is a very gritty yet touching love story. Nicholas Tanek gives the reader a bird's eye view into a world of drug and sex addiction and how those addictions influence, mold and change not only Nicholas and Lynn's lives but also their relationship. It's not your usual perfect love story as their relationship is not like many other novels you might have read before. The hero and heroine in this story are also not perfect, but very human indeed. They make many wrong choices, decisions and mistakes, but each time, they pick themselves up, move forward, and together form their own perfect relationship.
It didn't take too long into the book to discover that it's not at all about ending one's life. In fact, it's a story about creating one's own true life by living through the many trials and tribulations, successes and failures, happiness and hardships that life hands us. It's about accepting your own true self, desires and lifestyle despite what others may think. But mostly, it's about accepting and loving others for who and what they truly are. And finding someone who feels the same way about you.
Every once in awhile you come across a book that leaves a lasting impression. You think about it weeks after reading it, and can't help but tell people about it. It's a book that affects you in so many ways, that it joins the list of the best books you have ever read. The Coolest Way to Kill Yourself by Nicholas Tanek is one of these books.
From the get-go you are pulled into Nicholas and Lynn's story. As you read and see their story unfold from teenage love to breakups, failed marriages, abuse, drugs, and second chances, you know you're reading something special. The second chance between Lynn and Nicholas, is one of my favorite parts. They get to be themselves with each other. The truth and brutal honestly of this love story is stellar. It's what you take away from it that resonates long after you finish it. When it comes to love in it's truest from, it doesn't matter what your past and imperfections are. When you truly love someone, you can look past that and love them no matter what.
Nicholas Tanek is a superb writer. He makes you feel like he's talking to you directly as he tells his and Lynn's story. You can see them dancing at raves and hear all the music. As the reader you'll laugh and cry, as well as feel every emotion from love, heartbreak, anger, sadness and hope. Even though you know what's going to happen in the end, it still doesn't prepare you. The Coolest Way to Kill Yourself is a brilliant, beautiful, and captivating story that you will not want to miss.
